Power plant boiler refers to the steam boiler whose output is to drive the steam turbine and generator to generate electricity.

In 2016, Taishan Group obtained two sets of 12MW biomass CFB boiler in one biomass power generation company in China. The boiler capacity is 75t/h, steam pressure is 5.29Mpa and steam temperature is 485 Deg. C. Certainly, the electricity generated from the generator is 12MW.

Schedule for the power plant boiler

The whole production cycle is 5 months. The rst batch delivers steel frame, platform and other non-pressure parts in the third month. Second batch delivers pressure parts in the fourth month. And third batch delivers valve, instrument, guard plate, sundries and accessories in the fth month. Besides, the installation period was nished within four months.

Now the power plant boiler has operated for eight years, and the rated output is 75ton/h steam. Most importantly, this CFB boiler is our third-generation biomass boiler, which can burn a variety of biomass fuels, including waste wood, wood chip, sawdust, tree bark, etc. Above all, primary air and secondary air are reasonably allocated, combustion is stable, and combustion e ect is good. Above all, the thermal e ciency reaches 92%.

However, power plant boiler advanced design, reasonable structure, optimal material and automatically welded membrane wall guarantee low operation failure rate. Therefore, the overhaul is twice a year, small maintenance is once a month, which can guarantee annual operation of 7800-8000 hours.

Following the four-month installation was two-week commissioning and 48-hour trial operation. Certainly, it passed the performance acceptance and energy e ciency assessment, obtained the operation license from local government. Due to reliable and stable operation performance, the customer was satis ed.

Introduction to Biomass Boilers
Biomass fuel boilers, also known as biomass heating systems, use renewable biofuel to produce heat and hot water. Biofuel, typically wood pellets, chips, or logs, offers a cost-effective alternative to electricity, oil, and gas, making these boilers ideal for year-round use. Biomass fuel provides economic, environmental, and social benefits, including cost savings, fossil fuel conservation, and reduced CO₂ and NOx emissions.

Types of Biomass Fuel
Common biomass fuels include wood logs, chips, and pellets, along with agricultural waste, animal byproducts, and household waste. While wood pellets and chips can be fed automatically into the furnace, logs require manual loading. Biomass is recognized for being environmentally friendly, releasing minimal pollution during combustion.

Key Operational Procedures

1.Boiler Operation Adjustment

  • Ensure the evaporation rate aligns with the rated value, meeting steam turbine requirements.
  • Monitor and maintain stable steam pressure, temperature, and water levels to ensure safety.
  • Optimize combustion for improved efficiency and fuel savings.

2.Water Level Control
Washing the Water Gauge

  • Open the blowdown valve to flush the steam pipe, water pipe, and glass tube.
  • Close the water-side valve, and wash the steam pipe and gauge glass.
  • Alternate between steam and water-side valves, ensuring each section is thoroughly cleaned.
  • After washing, confirm that the water level rises quickly and fluctuates. If the rise is slow, repeat the process. Operators must wear protective gloves and avoid facing the gauge directly during washing.

Water Level Adjustment

  • Keep the water level at the center line of the gauge, with acceptable fluctuations within ±30mm.
  • The water supply rate should remain steady to prevent overfilling. Water levels beyond ±50mm are considered out of limits and require immediate adjustment.
  • Regularly monitor the gauge, performing daily cleaning and calibration to ensure accuracy.

3.Steam Pressure and Temperature Management

  • Rated steam pressure: 4.1 MPa, with a fluctuation range of ±0.05 MPa. Any deviation beyond these limits requires immediate action and communication with the shift supervisor.
  • Normal steam temperature: 385°C, with an acceptable fluctuation range of ±5–10°C.
  • Adjust combustion intensity and desuperheating water flow gradually to stabilize steam parameters. Sudden adjustments can disrupt operations.

4.Combustion Adjustment

  • Regulate fuel input and air volume based on load changes to maintain stable steam production.
  • Distribute fuel evenly across the grate to prevent uneven combustion and reduce the risk of coking. Ensure the fire spreads uniformly across the furnace bed.
  • Keep the combustion chamber flame golden-yellow, with oxygen levels between 4–6%, and maintain a negative pressure of 10–20 Pa.

5.Boiler Blowdown Process

Types of Blowdown

  • Continuous Blowdown: Removes water with high salt content from the boiler to prevent scaling.
  • Intermittent Blowdown: Removes sediment from the water wall headers.

Blowdown Procedure

  • Check the discharge valve before initiating blowdown, and raise the water level slightly above normal.
  • Open the primary valve first, followed by the secondary valve. Once blowdown is complete, close the secondary valve, then the primary valve, following a gradual sequence to avoid water hammer.
  • If pipe vibration occurs, pause blowdown until the issue is resolved. Avoid blowdown when the water level is below normal or when personnel are working near the system.

6.Rotating Machinery Maintenance

  • Check for abnormal vibrations, noise, or misalignment. Ensure all protective covers are in place, and anchor screws are tight.
  • Lubricate bearings regularly, ensuring oil levels are adequate. Refuel oil levelers once per shift.
  • Keep bearing temperatures below 80°C, and verify that cooling water is flowing smoothly.
  • Inspect transmission belts to prevent slippage or detachment during operation.

7. Operating and Maintenance of Slag Conveyor

Ensure the motor temperature stays below 80°C, and cooling water flow is stable. Check that the belt is free of red residue, and avoid reverse operation. Maintain proper oil levels by refilling when needed.

8. Maintenance of Slag Belt Conveyor

Make sure rollers are aligned and rotate smoothly. Lubricate the grate governor box and rotating parts as required. Keep the belt clear of residue and monitor the temperature of motors, bearings, and other components. Ensure the transmission belt remains in good condition without misalignment or wear.

9. Operating and Maintenance of Biomass Fuel Boiler

Regularly inspect all key components, including pressurized parts, valves, explosion-proof doors, and structural elements. Address any issues promptly. Follow the maintenance schedule for inspections and testing, log readings accurately, and ensure the operation area remains clean for safe performance.

11 Sets Taishan Group LPG Bullet Tank Delivered to Angola

Bullet tank is widely used in underground LPG storage.

In October 2024, high pressure vessel manufacturer Taishan Group won a big order – 17 sets LPG bullet tanks. Single LPG bullet tank has a diameter of 8m, length of 80m and weight of 480tons. The client is Angola Sonangol, and total contract value is over 20 million USD.

Due to the huge volume, we transport the manufactured tank sections to the port in batches, and then weld and assemble them.

First batch delivery includes 11 sets bullet tanks, and rest 6 sets will be delivered at the end of the year.

Biomass Briquette Boiler Design Analysis

Biomass briquette fuel is rod-shaped, block-shaped or granular fuel formed by extrusion, whose density is much greater than before.

The effusion rate of volatile matter and heat transfer rate are greatly reduced. The combustion includes: precipitation of water, precipitation and combustion of volatiles, and combustion of fixed carbon. In order to improve the combustion and boiler efficiency, take the following measures in the biomass briquette boiler design:

(1) The reciprocating grate with an inclination angle of 6°, not only reducing the overall height but ensuring the smooth movement.

(2) The grate reduction box adopts stepless speed control, which can accurately adjust the speed according to fuel combustion condition.

(3) The feedstock adopts variable frequency screw feeder plus distributor, ensuring accurate feeding and evenly distribution of fuel on the grate.

(4) Reasonable furnace height of biomass pellet boiler ensures lower furnace volume heat release rate.

(5) Reasonable height of secondary air ensures secondary air volume and outlet speed, and strengthens the combustion of volatile matter.

(6) Secondary air pipe is on the fire barrier, prolonging flue gas residence time and promoting the settlement of fly ash.

(7) Spirally corrugated tube has a flue gas velocity of 21m/s, preventing fly ash deposition and ensuring high heat exchange efficiency.

Biomass Briquette Boiler Structure

The biomass fuel boiler is double drum, longitudinal layout, reciprocating grate steam boiler. It includes two parts: upper boiler body and lower combustion equipment.

Upper boiler body includes drum, spirally corrugated tube, upper and lower headers, and water wall tube. The inner side is furnace wall, front and rear arches, fire barrier and flue duct. The outer side is steel frame and outer cover, and the middle is aluminum silicate insulation material.

Lower combustion equipment is 6° reciprocating grate, considering pushing and moving of fuel on grate and overall height limit.

The secondary air volume accounts for 25% of total air volume, and air speed is about 50m/s. The volatile matter of biomass briquette fuel is up to 70%. The design of secondary air is particularly important for ensuring the combustion of volatile matter and efficiency of boiler.
